I’ve always been fascinated by one question: why do people do what they do?

Why do we act, react, think, believe, and even hear things so differently?

When I came to the point of accepting Christ’s life, death, and resurrection by faith, my life began to transform from the inside out. For the first time, I engaged in a local church and actually enjoyed it. But I couldn’t ignore the differences I saw, not only between individuals in the same church, but also between churches themselves.

That curiosity led me to appreciate the power of Spiritual Gifts.

Why the Church Needs Every Gift

What troubled me was how little appreciation many churches had for the unique differences among people. Too often, individuals were treated like cattle, herded into Sunday Schools, worship services, or programs, without much thought to their distinctive wiring or gifts.

The New Testament repeatedly describes the church as a body (Romans 12, 1 Corinthians 12–14, Ephesians 4, 1 Peter 4). A body isn’t static. It's a living organism on a mission. And in that mission, every member has a specific role to play, not because they’ve earned it, but because God has given them a unique gift to contribute.

Unfortunately, many churches miss this. It’s like a football team where everyone is expected to play the same position. Can you imagine a team of only quarterbacks or only offensive linemen? They wouldn’t last a game.

The Journey of the Spiritual Gifts Assessment

Nearly 50 years ago, under the guidance of my pastor, Don Loomer, I created a simple paper-and-pencil Spiritual Gifts Assessment to help uncover these unique roles. Over the decades, I’ve refined it into what it is today: a psychometrically solid instrument with high reliability and validity. Your answers aren’t just scored in isolation; they’re normed against thousands of other followers of Christ to give you meaningful insight.

From the beginning, I believed this tool should remain free. And by God’s grace, it has. In the last five years alone, over 70,000 people worldwide have taken it, including a Spanish translation. My prayer is that each person discovers and develops their gifts (2 Timothy 1:6), strengthening not only their own walk but the health of the church.

Keeping It Free for the Next Generation

Now, here’s the reality. It costs money to maintain and expand this platform. Servers, IT systems, and updates aren’t free. Until now, we’ve absorbed those costs, but because of the large increase in people taking the assessment, it’s no longer sustainable. That’s why we’re seeking to raise $10,000 to keep the Spiritual Gifts Assessment free for everyone around the world.

If you’d like to make a tax-deductible donation, you can do so here.

I also wrote a short book that explains how the gifts show up in a local church (paperback $7.99, Kindle $2.99). Every cent of those proceeds goes back into supporting the assessment. Last month, those royalties came to… $8.92. 😄 So we’re still a long way from covering the costs.

My hope is simple: that people discover how God uniquely wired them, that churches stop trying to make everyone play the same position, and that the full body of Christ is unleashed into the world.

When every member uses their gifts, the church becomes what it was always meant to be: a living body on mission.
